It’s impossible to make a list of Canadian fast-food legends without including A&W because they’re easily the best at what they do. A&W has a way of turning simple dishes, like bacon and eggs that nobody really paid extra attention to, into steaming hot masterpieces.

A lot of excellent food comes out of A&W every day, and for this reason, they’ve continued to top charts and break records year after year.

What’s the origin of A&W and how exactly did they start?

Contrary to popular belief, the Canadian A&W didn’t actually start as a different company from the beginning. Many people think that A&W Canada doesn’t have any connection with the American version of the brand, but they’re wrong. They obviously didn’t mean to be wrong because it’s a pretty confusing situation. Read to the end and you’ll get the whole gist.

So here’s the thing: In 1919, Roy W. Allen opened a root beer stand in Lodi, California, and at that time, there weren’t any plans for an expansion or anything. The guy just wanted to sell his thick, creamy, mouthwatering beer and live his life with a few extra bucks in his pocket.

About four years later, Roy’s employee, Frank Wright, who had been very loyal to him, brought up the idea of opening a restaurant and fortunately, he didn’t hate the idea. So they put some resources together and in 1923, they opened their first fast-food spot in Sacramento, California.

In case you were wondering where the name A&W originated from, it was derived from the initials of the founders Allen and Wright. Now you know, you’re welcome.

What about the beer? Did they stop the production?

The answer to that is no, they didn’t stop producing beer, instead; they grew it and made it a bigger name on its own. In the United States, what made A&W Root Beer so popular was their frosted mugs. They would put empty mugs into the freezer and pour in the drink when it’s time to serve.

This move gave their brand a little forward push because they did something different…and fresh!

They opened the first Canadian restaurant in 1956. There were two in Winnipeg and Montreal. They became popular for their cute burger names too. They had a collection of burgers that they called The Burger Family. Their burgers were given family title names like Papa Burger, Mama Burger, Teen Burger, Baby Burger and some others.

A&W has been thriving for over 100 years! It’s safe to say they are role-model goals.

THE A&W CANADA SPLIT

Is A&W Canada still under the American brand? Nope, they are not. The franchise was acquired by Unilever in 1972 and in 1995; the management acquired a large part of it too. This was the last straw that cut all the ties connecting A&W Canada to A&W USA.

They got not only separated from the USA franchise but also renamed because answering the exact same name wouldn’t really be a good move in the trademark world.

It wasn’t a very strict renaming though, because they still got to keep the A&W part of the name. However, there were a few not-so-obvious changes made. It went from A&W Restaurants, Inc. to A&W Food Services of Canada, Inc.

Might seem as if the name change didn’t consist of so much, but they probably minimized the changes that way to preserve the legacies of the founders.

CONCLUSION

From Root Beer to Eggers and family names, we can effortlessly say A&W are pros in the game. So whenever you feel like having breakfast the simple, yet extremely classy way, you shouldn’t hesitate to stop by at A&W or you can hop over to their website, check out their menu, and get ready to be treated to the finest meals of Canada.

Like A&W would say, Taste is in everything we serve. You can be rest assured that the ‘taste’ they’re talking about is the perfect blend of savory and you’ll never be able to forget. Not so fast.
