In 1937, he launched his brand of handbags that features the iconic web stripe and double G monogram. After a while, Gucci started a store in Beverly Hills and Palm Beach, and due to its opulent design and exotic nature, it was quickly endorsed by Hollywood celebrities. Currently, Gucci is globally respected as a top luxury fashion brand.

It’s committed to sourcing and using only the finest materials, which make its products extremely durable. Gucci handbags are handcrafted in Italy or Switzerland, where factory workers make a good, livable wage, with ultra-careful attention to detail. Also, each Gucci bag undergoes strict quality controls to ensure they come out perfectly identical

Are Gucci bags Made of Animal Skin?

However, Gucci materials are mainly leather, feathers, wool, animal skin, (exotic animals), and hair. So basically, Gucci depends on animals for the production of its materials. So you can’t consider Gucci to be a vegan fashion brand.

Where Does Gucci Source Its Materials From?

Gucci has more than 3000 subcontracted suppliers that supply this exotic animal skin, hair, feathers, and leather to the company. However, what is unclear here is whether Gucci has a policy for upholding rights in these workplaces. Also, 100% of Gucci products are produced in Italy.

What Animal Leather Does Gucci Use?

Gucci products, both the vintage and newer models are made from pigskin, calf, and exotic leathers from animals imported from several parts of the world.

The newer Gucci bags come with the embossed interlocking GG logo pattern similar to what was found on most of Gucci’s canvas products, which serves as a premise for authenticating the Gucci bag.

Does Gucci Use Cow Hide?

Gucci has some eco-friendly bags that are exclusively crafted exclusively from cattle raised on Brazilian ranches. The bags are embossed with the Green Carpet Challenge brand, a project started by Livia, Colin Firth’s wife, in 2009 to increase the profile of ethics in the global fashion industry

Does Gucci Use Real Snake?

Yes, it does. Although sounds scary, most of the materials used for the classic Gucci bags are skins of real snakes, the majority are from pythons snakes.

One interesting thing is that the company that supplies real leather to luxury fashion brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen is opening its own python farm in Thailand to upscale its supply of snakeskins.

Snakeskins are one of the major raw materials required for Gucci production. So, these snake skins are collected and undergo tanning to make them fit to be used. This leads us to the next section.

What is Tanning: How Does It Work

The tanning process begins with sourcing an animal’s skin. Before tanning animal skin, you must first kill the animal and skin it immediately, before the body heat leaves the tissues. This first stage is usually done by a tanner. Also, you can obtain skin at a slaughterhouse, farm, or fur trader. Most fashion brands including Gucci employ the latter.

Tanners or fur traders use the natural tannic acid from the animal to tan its own hide before curing it. After, the animal has been skinned, and the skin collected. The next stage is scraping all the flesh, fat, and membrane off the flesh of the skin, after which the tanner washes the skin and stretches it on a dry surface to dry. Then, the main tanning process kicks off.

Next, the tanning process involves the preparation of the hides which is started by first curing the skin with salt to prevent the putrefaction of the collagen from bacterial growth during the period from procuring the hide to when it is fully processed.

The process of curing entails removing water from the skins and using a difference in osmotic pressure. This process greatly reduces the moisture content of the skins and hides. Also, the osmotic pressure is increased in this process, which makes it difficult for bacteria to grow.

Curing can either be wet-salting or brine curing. In wet salting, the skin or hides are heavily salted, and inserted into packs and tight containers for about 30 days, while in brine curing, the skin or hides are bathed thoroughly with salt water for about 16 hours. The final process of curing entails preserving the skins and hides at very low temperatures.

The Nature of the Gucci Handbag

The Gucci handbags come in a variety of sizes, textures, and styles. They are made of animal skin, leather, suede, and canvas and come in small or medium-sized bags. Some of these bags have adjustable straps, which are mostly made of leather, while a few do not. Some of the Gucci bags come in very small shapes like purses, or pouches which basically are used to carry money.

Gucci bags may come in blue and white color with a leaf-and-flower design, or in black color with tan leather trim, or come in tan and brown color with light caramel-colored trim. However, most times, Gucci handbags have a red and green stripe down the center of the bag, including a metal Gucci logo.

Gucci bags are carefully handcrafted to give you the best styles in unique patterns. When purchasing a Gucci bag, ensure you carefully observe it to make sure it is hand-sewn, if not, immediately drop it, for there are high chances that it is fake.
