You must’ve heard one of KFC’s slogans that says, “Nobody Does Chicken Like KFC” and do you know the best part? They are absolutely right!
At KFC, their process of cooking chicken doesn’t involve deep frying unlike other Fried Chicken brands, because the founder wanted it to remain special in every way.
Harland Sanders founded this fast-food chain in the 1940s. It all started when he took over a small Shell filling station just outside North Corbin, Kentucky and started serving people fried chicken (and dishes that compliment fried chicken) that he learnt to make when he was younger.
When he realized that many people were falling in love with his special recipe, he purchased a space at the larger filling station on the other side of the road so that he could have enough room for frying in bulkier amounts.
The success and popularity of his fast-food spot gained him the title of Kentucky Colonel in 1936 and they rewarded him for hard work, consistency and for being an inspiration to upcoming brands. The 43rd Governor of Kentucky, Ruby Laffoon, inaugurated Harland Sanders.
A year after he became the Colonel, he expanded the restaurant to a capacity of 142 seats, added a motel to the brand and named it Sanders Court & Café. The brand experienced a massive spike in daily visitors, and the people of Kentucky agreed they couldn’t wish for another Colonel.
In 1950, he was re-inaugurated and from that day he decided he would put in extra effort to “look the part.” That was how the goatee look was born.
Remember the guy on the KFC logo? Yup, that’s Colonel Harland Sanders.
He started growing a goatee and wearing black frock coats or white frock coats (mostly white). He also added a string tie to the combo and started referring to them as “colonel clothes.” The man was definitely living the dream of every Kentucky young person.
Colonel Sanders sold his properties in 1955 and moved to the US to franchise his beloved (and very secret) chicken recipe to restaurant owners. A lot of United States residents in different cities started loving this special chicken and so giving it a name was just the right thing to do.
A sign painter who was hired by Pete Harman, one franchisee, suggested the name Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Colonel loved it immediately. Supposedly, the major reason he clung to the name immediately was because it spoke about the roots of the chicken.
From just sharing his chicken to restaurant owners, KFC became a full-fledged fast-food restaurant on its own and the expansion journey happened as fast as the naming did.
By 1970, there were about 3,000 stores in over 45 countries and 10 years later when Colonel Harland Sanders passed away, the number of restaurants had already reached 6,000 in 48 countries worldwide and they were already making about $2 billion yearly.
The more countries KFC opens outlets in, the more lovers they gather for themselves and they don’t look like they’re planning to back down soon.

WHAT IS KFC 11 HERBS AND SPICES?
Many people who go to eat at KFC end up wondering, “Okay what exactly do these guys put in their chicken?” because it is amazing as hell and so many other people have tried to crack the code and find the answer to the recipe question…and yeah, they’ve failed terribly.
Colonel Harland Sanders once disclosed that the recipe of his fried chicken contains 11 herbs and spices that we can all find on our kitchen shelves. The trick is, well, no one has been able to find out which ingredients they are.
KFC’s Original 11 Herbs and Spices recipe is considered as one of the best known trade secrets in the fast-food industry and this keeps them on people’s lips (and in their mouths) all the time.
The only two ingredients that were made known to the public by Colonel Sanders were salt and pepper. He assured us that they can be found among the list of other ingredients.
Every other year, someone shows up and claims to have found the recipe written somewhere or stolen it from some certain place, and all those times, tasting it has proved them very wrong.
So for now, all we can do is enjoy the masterpiece that KFC has made available for us and hope that probably one day, we’ll be able to recreate it in our homes.
Every item on KFC’s menu is irresistible and everyone has a personal favorite. What’s yours?
