Most fast-food restaurants are popularly known for something. Could be the way their staff dress or the names they give the items on their menu. For Wendy’s, it’s the shape of their hamburger patties.
I mean, it’s not every day you see a burger patty with a square shape. It sticks out of the burger edges, makes people stare and ask a couple of questions, including the famous, “where did you get that?” Whoever came up with the square patty idea must be a genius.
In this case, whoever is not anonymous. His name is David Thomas, and he founded this awesome belly-satisfactory spot in Columbus, Ohio. You know what’s even more awesome; he named the restaurant after his daughter, Melinda Lou Thomas.
You’re probably thinking, “where exactly did the ‘Wendy’ come from then?” Thing is, when she was little, her younger siblings couldn’t pronounce her name so they started calling her “Wenda” which later evolved into “Wendy” which later evolved into a million dollar fast-food spot.
Remember that cute redhead girl on the Wendy’s logo with freckles and a striped top? Just kidding, I know you remember. Well, she’s David Thomas’ daughter, and the drawing isn’t just a representation but an animated form of an actual picture of Wendy Thomas. The first Wendy’s restaurant that was opened even had her picture on the wall. She most definitely would’ve felt like a celebrity, and technically, she is.
Apart from having square-shaped burger patties, Wendy’s also has a drink that makes people fall in love at the first sip. It’s somewhere in between a milkshake and a soft-serve ice cream. They call it “The Frosty.” In fact, there’s a ton of things that Wendy’s does differently and amazingly, of course.
The Frosty had only one flavor when Dave Thomas invented it alongside the restaurant in November, 1969. The Chief Marketing Officer, Ian Rowden, at the time disclosed that “Dave wanted a dessert on the menu that was so thick you had to eat it with a spoon.” Then the masterpiece was born.
It came in only one flavor (light chocolate) and stuck with just that flavor for 36 years before its companion (vanilla) was unleashed in 2006. Now it’s really weird to imagine Wendy’s almighty Frosty with only one existing flavor. Fortunately, there are a two amazing flavors to choose from in recent times. Isn’t that great?!
The first Canadian Wendy’s restaurant opened its doors in Hamilton, Ontario in 1976 and the progressive growth hasn’t stopped ever since.
Wendy’s has locations in almost every country in the world. Some still have that traditional vibe with people doing more work than machines and some, well let’s just say they’ve taken this fast-food thing to another level.

WENDY’S SLOGAN EVOLUTION
Many brands would dump a slogan immediately they come up with a better one because old things shall pass away, right?
Wendy’s however, didn’t part with their very first slogan although they’ve been coming up with newer, better and more interesting ones.
Contrary to popular belief, their first slogan wasn’t “Old-fashioned Burgers.” It’s not even a slogan. It’s more like the company’s tagline. Their first slogan was “Quality Is Our Recipe” and they’re not even joking about living up to the expectations in that sentence.
It was formed in 1969, the same year Wendy’s was founded. And since then, they’ve stuck with it.
That’s not Wendy’s only slogan, though. They have so many slogans to the extent that some countries even have a personalized one for that country alone.
Out of all their general slogans, only four are still kicking it till now. The rest of them rarely last over 10 years before they change them.
Those four special ones are:
- “Quality Is Our Recipe” (1969-present)
- “You Can Eat Great, Even Late” (1997-present)
- “It’s Good To Be Square” (2005-present)
- “We Got You” (2019-present)
After seeing these slogans, you should why they haven’t been dumped. I mean, look at the phrases. They all have deep meanings and represent Wendy’s extremely well.
CONCLUSION
From old-fashioned burgers to milky desserts. Wendy’s success story is really one of a kind!
