Where Are Coach Bags Made?

The majority of the coach bags are made in China. Also, some authenticated Coach bags are made in the United States, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Italy, Mexico, Hungary, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic

No matter where a Coach bag was made, you have to authenticate the bag, by examining its creed patch label that contains the serial number which provides information on where and when the bag was made.

Coach is a Luxury New York industry that changed its name to “Tapestry Inc” with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), to reflect the company’s wider brand umbrella. The brand’s portfolio consists of Coach, Kate Spade, and Stuart Weitzman.

According to the 2019 Annual SEC Report, manufacturers of Coach products were mostly situated in mainland China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Also, the report states that one vendor in Vietnam individually supplies about 10% of the brand’s total purchases.

In the mid-70s, Coach created what is called the “Creed” to enhance the security of the bag. The creed is a serial number system that is found on the creed tag that tells you when and where a particular coach bag is made, and as such, you can easily trace the bag.

Brief History of Coach Creed

As stated earlier, the creed system came into play in the mid-1970s, around the time that Bonnie Cashin left the company.

The creed serial number system follows a regular format. The serial number starts with a letter followed by four numbers, a dash, and more numbers. The letter stands for the month in which the bag was made – here the months of the year are represented by A, B, C, etc, in the preceding order. Out of the four numbers that precede the letter, the first two numbers indicate the year the bag was made, and the two last numbers, the place of manufacture. The last set of digits represents the style code. Right above the serial number on the creed patch is a paragraph containing letters all written in upper case that sounds meaningful when read.

Serial Number Changes

In the early 2000s, Coach modified the serial number by adding zero “0” as a prefix to the first three-digit series. The zero signified that the bag was Coach Factory Outlet bound.

In 2006, the production number which was four digits was increased to five digits.

Around 2014, the “F” letter was added to the last series of four digits (that indicates the model number) to authenticate that the bag is from the Coach Factory.

In newer Coach bags, the serial number was no longer stamped on the creed, as done in older models. The serial number is now located on the seam tag, after the “Made In” word, which depicts the location where the bag was made.
